Be Aware of the Risks of Eye Disease

While many eye conditions can be minor and easily treatable, some require more long-term management. These eye diseases can significantly affect your eye health and vision, but we can help diagnose these problems in their early stages of development.

When it comes to eye disease, the best way to protect your vision is with regular eye exams. Early detection and treatment can help reduce the chance of vision loss

Common Eye Diseases

Eye diseases can develop at any age, but the risk increases as you get older. These conditions can develop without symptoms, making regular eye exams important for protecting your vision.

We test for eye disease during every eye exam to help identify these conditions as early as possible. The earlier we diagnose a problem, the sooner we can recommend a treatment plan.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that affects your central vision, the things you see directly in front of you. This condition can occur naturally with age, causing the macula to lose the cells needed for sight. AMD has 2 different forms, dry and wet AMD.

Cataracts are a condition where your eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy and hazy, making it difficult to see. Having a cataract can feel like you’re looking through a foggy window. At first, you may not notice a cataract, but many patients require cataract surgery to improve their vision.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that patients with diabetes can develop. It occurs when blood vessels in the retina become damaged, leaking blood and fluid because of high blood sugar levels. As this disease progresses, it can lead to severe vision loss.

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that affect the optic nerve, the part of the eye that sends light signals to your brain, which it then interprets as images. Often, glaucoma is caused by an increase in intraocular pressure (pressure inside of the eye), but not always. First, glaucoma begins affecting the peripheral vision, working its way in.
